About Andrea

Born in Diriamba, Nicaragua, Andrea moved to Stockton, California in early 2024 as an asylum seeker pursuing Associate Degrees in Journalism and Political Science at San Joaquin Delta College. Her passion for storytelling began at age 15 covering hyperlocal sports soccer, but her focus shifted toward politics and community reporting after covering Nicaragua’s 2018 civic uprising — an experience that shaped her understanding of press freedom, civil rights and the cost of speaking truth to power.

As Co–Editor-in-Chief of The Collegian, Delta College’s First Ammendment student newspaper, Andrea led coverage of campus life, community issues and politics with an emphasis on clarity, depth and human connection. Her award-winning opinion writing has been recognized statewide by the Journalism Association of Community Colleges and the California College Media Association for its insight, voice and civic urgency.

In 2025, Andrea joined Stocktonia as a freelance reporter and was selected as a fellow for the CalMatters College Journalism Network, contributing statewide coverage of higher education and public policy.

In 2026, she continued with Stocktonia as a summer intern and was selected to join EdSource California Student Journalism Corps cohort.

Andrea is transferring to California State University, Sacramento in Fall 2026 to continue studying Political Science and Journalism, with long-term goals of working in political and investigative reporting focused on equity, democracy, and representation.
